Right at Home Perth Midland Builds Social Program Improving Lives and its Bottom Line

24 July 2025

Right at Home Perth Midland strikes a chord in their community with a Social Program so popular with clients and their families the office has had to double its offering.

General Manager, Registered Nurse, and local legend Charly Hillan joined Right at Home in April 2023 to run the newly corporate-owned franchise under the leadership of Head Office. Charly said that the first six months were focused on compliance and getting the business back up and running to the standards Right at Home upholds across its network.

Perth Midland’s Social Program began in February 2024 with a monthly socialisation and engagement activity out in the community. In May 2025, the Perth Midland team expanded the Program to twice monthly because demand was so high. The expanded Program encompasses an in-house activity like chair yoga and pet therapy and an outing like lunch at a local restaurant and whale watching (yes, that’s right).

“The way it’s built is every three months we do something about food, something to participate in, and something to watch,” Charly explains.

Quarterly invitations are sent to the clients via post with all the information they need to decide whether they would like to join. The team also posts regularly on social media about upcoming and past events.

For Charly, the Program not only promotes socialisation but has also helped with the bottom line. Each session can garner the office anywhere between $300 and $3,500.

“We’ve been going for 18 months now and it’s a great point of difference, a really good selling point for us,” Charly says.

“We’ve got clients that go to every single one of our events because they just love it so much.”

The team has learnt a few things along the way, including picking the right time of year to do an outdoor activity, ensuring the restaurant gets the seating right, and giving clients the opportunity to eat the food, not cook it.

“We’re trying some new things as we go along but we really focus on client feedback.”

The Perth Midland team researches the types of venues appropriate for elderly clients and clients with disability. Reconnaissance missions are crucial along with accessibility and minimising out-of-pocket expenses. Charly attends almost all of the sessions to ensure there is a clinic presence on site.

In response to the Program’s success, Head Office has developed a framework including policies and procedures and other collateral to support Perth Midland and any other office that might want to onboard a similar program.

For Right at Home Australia’s other 57 franchise offices, Charly says that to take on a project like this you must make sure your bucket is not already full.

“For the last 12–14 months we have been doing it in-house, but it’s gotten to the point where we are thinking about employing someone dedicated to the Program,” Charly explains.

“Now that we have two activities per month and our clients are pushing for more, we will be employing someone to manage the Program as well has handle some outside sales.”

For the majority of clients, the Program is funded by their Home Care Package with some NDIS and private pay clients.

To determine client to caregiver ratio, Charly bases this on a clinical risk analysis.

“Say the client has a cognitive impairment or needs mobility support, the client is charged based on that risk because you can’t charge someone a one-on-one rate if they don’t need one-on-one care,” Charly says.

“Clients are usually a one-to-one, one-to-two, or one-to-three, which gives me an indication of how many carers need to be staffed based on the level of client interest.”
